How to Receive a Massage

I recently filled in at a Chiropractic Office for a massage therapist and on her wall she had this printout on  "How to Receive a Massage" for her clients.  as I was preparing the room for the next massage client it caught my attentionBetween massage sessions I had some time  to read it and really liked it so I asked the Dr. if he would mind if I used it for my website and in my business, Blue Pacific Massage & Body Works. I took a copy home and yes I did do a little editing and added or changed a few things but I wanted to share with anyone interested.....

Because Massage is not a common part of our contemporary cultural experience, many people feel uneasy about receiving their first massage. Here are a few guidelines to help you feel at ease and to gain the greatest benefit from your massage session.

Tell the therapist about areas of your body, which are injured, tense or sore. Also mention any medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, heart problem, chronic headaches, varicose veins or recent surgery. Most therapist have you fill out forms with these questions prior to your first session as they want to be sure there are no contraindications with the massage . With this knowledge they can decide which treatments you would benefit with the most.

The best way to receive a massage is with the body completely unclothed. The therapist is sensitive to the need for privacy and will keep your body covered with a sheet or blanket, except for the area being massaged. It will be uncovered while being massaged and then recovered when not. However if this  is uncomfortable in any way you may choose to wear under garments or a swimsuit, the client may choose to leave on as much clothing as needed for comfort.  This is your massage session and you should be as comfortable as possible.

Conversation can be distracting to you and the therapist. Good massage often requires the therapist to focus her thoughts and energy and concentrate on what your body is telling her and what she needs to do for your body to receive the healing process through the massage. Try to confine your conversation to feedback about the massage. Some people don’t realize that conversation is distracting them from truly feeling the sensations a massage gives. Try just concentrating on those sensations and you might be amazed at the difference it does actually make.

Once you are on the massage table close your eyes and allow yourself to relax as completely as possible. Focus your attention on your breathing, slow deep and even, allow yourself to experience all those relaxing sensations.

When the Massage Therapist’s hands locate areas of pain or tension in the body, try doing this mind exercise …consciously try to relax the area being massaged and as you inhale deeply visualize the breath flowing to the tense area and relaxing it then as you fully exhale visualize the tension leaving the body with the breath.

Allow the Massage Therapist to move your limbs into various positions. Be Limp, like a rag doll, and do not try to help move your arms, legs, or head. The therapist is a trained professional who will not do anything to hurt you. However, feel free to speak up if anything the therapist does is too painful or ticklish, or uncomfortable in any way. Most Massage Therapist ask the client about the pressure they are using if it is to much or not enough and when doing deep tissue they will most likely use a pain scale for you to communicate with them about the pressure being used as a trained professional they know the importance of pain scales and how to much pain can actually hurt you more than help you. So be sure and take the responsibility to inform the therapist of any discomfort so that adjustments can be made to the pressure and/or massage techniques being used.

Very often, as the body releases tension during a massage, the mind will release emotion. If you suddenly feel sad, angry or joyful do not be alarmed, allow yourself to express these feelings by crying or laughing. At the very least, feel free to sigh with the relaxation or hum with pleasure.

Many people fall asleep during a relaxing massage, an indication that the body and mind are releasing stress and tension. The massage therapist will gently wake you when it is time to turn over or end the massage.

Contrary to a common notion in our society about massage, it is an ancient healing art and not a sexual service. The body might become aroused as you experience the pleasure of total relaxation.  However, sexual behavior during the massage is inappropriate and will result in termination of the massage session. A Professional Massage Therapist will not tolerate any sexual advances as this is her profession and looks at Massage as the Healing Art it actually is.

Enjoy your massage and I hope that this experience will be the beginning of a lifelong practice to help you enjoy the benefits of massage for your overall health and well being.

Lower Back Pain

Massage Therapy & Lower Back Pain

Recent studies have found that professional massage therapy is one of the more effective, and money saving alternatives available, and more beneficial than traditional medical treatments.  Seeking the assistance of a professional massage therapist, is the most beneficial treatment you will find!

Dr. Daniel Cherkin, Director of the Group Health Research Institute states that lower back pain is also a common cause of disability, work absenteeism, and 'presenteeism,' when people are unable to perform well at work. A study involving 401 patients with ages ranging between 20, to 65 years, found some amazing results when these people were treated with massage therapy.

The study compared the effectiveness of structural massage, versus usual medical care, medication, and physical therapy. Patients were randomly assigned to receive one of three treatments as follows:

· Group 1 – Full body relaxation massage, often called Swedish massage
· Group 2 – Focused deep tissue massage for pain related tissues, ligaments, and joints.
· Group 3 – Painkillers, anti inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, or physical therapy.

Groups 1 & 2 were given a one hour massage, once a week for 10 weeks.

After 10 weeks, the patients were surveyed again in relation to their symptoms, and mobility, and again assessed at 6 months, and again at 12 months.

Groups 1 & 2 reported that their lower back pain had improved significantly, or was completely gone altogether.  It was found that patients who received massage therapy, were twice as likely to see improvements in pain, and function, as those receiving usual medical treatment, as with Group 3.

After 10 weeks, approximately two-thirds of groups 1 & 2, had made substantial improvement as opposed to about one-third of those in the usual care group. These results quite literally speak for themselves.

This type of massage treatment works for other areas of the body, upper back, neck, arms, legs ect.

Even though studies in the past have somewhat concentrated on the benefits of deep tissue massage, this study has also proven that relaxation massage, also has incredible benefits.  There are two main reasons for this, relaxation massage is more widely available, and more affordable than a lot of traditional medical treatments, and medications.

Massage For Tension Headaches

Are Tension Headaches Affecting Your Life?

We've all experienced that horrible headache, caused by stress and tension. They can stop us from being able to focus properly, can inhibit our performance at work, as well as stop any chance to relax. This in turn stops the body from being able to recharge the batteries, and the cycle continues. Seeking the assistance of a qualified, professional massage therapist just may be the answer!

A lot of people have heard the term “tension headache,” but may not exactly understand what it is. Basically, a tension headache is caused by stress, and exacerbated by dehydration. Pain seems to occur at the top, and/or sides of the head, and sometimes can also include pain behind the eyes, and stiff neck and shoulders. These can go on for days on end if steps aren't taken to fix the issue.

Blue Pacific Massage & Body Works is a professional massage therapy business, located in Hesperia, California. Owner/operator Terree Nelson, is highly qualified and experienced in a large variety of massage therapy methods, and techniques. Tension headaches often originate from a painful neck and shoulders. These are caused by stress, and even a bad posture, which can spread up to the muscles around the skull. Not many people are actually aware that there are muscles around the skull.

When we are experiencing this kind of headache, many people unknowingly add to it by clenching their jaw.  We can tend to do this in our sleep, without even realizing it.  This is also not good for the teeth. This tightens the muscles around the skull even further, resulting in constant headaches. So now we know what causes these headaches, how can Blue Pacific Massage & Body Works help?

Terree can effectively ease and soften the muscles around the sides of the head, temples, and where the neck meets the skull. Research has shown that chronic tension headaches can indeed be treated efficiently by a professional massage therapist.  An experienced massage therapist from Blue Pacific Massage & Body Works can also advise on exercises you can do yourself at home, or in the office, to help ease the muscle tension.

If you are one of the many sufferers of tension headaches, get a massage for tension headaches just Call or Text 760 680 7910 for your appointment!!

On- Site Chair Massage

On- Site Chair Massage

There is so much that can be shared about massage and its benefits I thought today I would share the benefits of chair massage at work or mainly known as On-Site Chair Massage for the office or workplace which has become more and more popular today.

It's easy, fast and fairly inexpensive, giving chair massages helps to relax and rejuvenate your employees and lets them enjoy the healing power of massage. Chair massage helps relieve many of the problems associated with repetitive movement.

Many scientific studies show the benefits of chair massage as well as benefits to your business. Employee Benefits: Decrease in Stress, Boost to Immune System, Improve Circulation, Lower Blood Pressure, , Relieves Headache, Reduces Muscle tension , Improves Thinking, Enhances Flexibility, Promotes a sense of well-being.
Employer Benefits: Increase Productivity, Lower Workplace Stress Levels, Decrease Absenteeism, Improve Retention Rates, Less Ergonomics Related InjuriesPromotes a revitalized and healthier workforce.

Chair Massage is focused on the upper and lower lack, neck, shoulders, arms and hands. There are different methods for giving a chair massage yet most commonly it is usually done using an Ergonomically designed chair which is what I use, it is also done through the clothes & no oil. Time is usually 10-20 minutes. Depending on your therapist there are different Massage Techniques used such as Swedish (PetrissageTapotement, Vibration, ect.), Deep Tissue, Acupressure. Some incorporate the use of different stretching techniques so its usually what the Massage Therapist decides to put in the mix.

Highly recommended for you Business owners show your employees you appreciate them by adding a monthly, or by-monthly chair massage.

Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage Explained

Most of us have heard the term “Swedish Massage,” but probably most do not know it's origin, or how beneficial it can actually be. Swedish physiologist, Per Henrik Ling, pioneered both Swedish massage, and physical therapy at the University of Stockholm in the early 19th century. Ling developed a system called “Medical Gymnastics” which incorporated movements performed by a professional therapist. This technique was brought to the United States in 1858, and is known as Swedish massage.

Swedish massage is now the most common and probably best known massage technique in the west. But how exactly can it benefit you?  Swedish massage involves the massage therapist using certain massage strokes to relieve muscle pain. Depending on your own individual needs, a professionally trained Swedish massage therapist, can either use slow and gentle techniques, or vigorous, and bracing.  A professionally trained Swedish massage therapist will first work to relax the muscles, and prepare them for deeper strokes or  “deep tissue” therapy.   Normally an experienced Swedish massage therapist will require about 50 to 60 minutes of your time to ensure you get the most benefit from this technique.

Blue Pacific Massage and Body Works, is a professional massage therapy business located in Hesperia, California.  Owner/operator Terree Nelson, is a highly qualified, and trained CMT, certified massage therapist. Trained in a wide variety of massage modalities, and techniques, Terree's focus is on the wellness, and health of her clients.  A professional Swedish massage therapist, among many other styles, Terree explains the entire process to each and every client, and takes the time to find every area that requires work.

Keeping to the correct Swedish massage technique, Terree first lubricates the skin with massage oil, and performs a variety of massage strokes to warm up the muscle tissue, release tension, and gradually break up any muscle “knots.” Among the many benefits of Swedish massage, this technique also promotes relaxation.  It is always highly advised to inform Terree of any injuries, or conditions you are suffering. Unlike many other massage therapists, Terree communicates throughout the massage, to ensure you are completely comfortable, and to discuss any degree of discomfort you may be feeling.

If you are someone who requires deeper massage work, and can tolerate more pressure, and even moments of discomfort to get relief from muscle pain, then there are many techniques that can be done.

Call or Text (760) 680 7910 to arrange an appointment, and to also discuss your specific needs. Terree can even design a personalized massage, and wellness program, just for you.

Massage for Neck Pain

               Are You Suffering Neck Pain?

Every one of us has experienced neck pain at one time or another.  It could be that you have an injury, a medical condition, or may have even slept the wrong way.  Regardless of the reason, neck pain and neck related pain, is never much fun to deal with, and can severely limit our day to day activities.  What you really need to do, is seek out a professional massage therapist, Hesperia, CA.

In the United States, neck pain is one of the most common health problems.  Usually, people will see their medical practitioner, and some will sometimes turn to alternative medical therapies, such as massage, for assistance.  Up until recently, little was known about the effectiveness of message therapy with neck pain, even though massage techniques have been used for centuries in many cultures.

A study was recently conducted at the Group Health Center in Seattle, with 64 sufferers of neck pain.  This study was NCCAM-funded.  Participants in the study had to have had neck pain persisting for at least 12 weeks to qualify, and were then randomly assigned to receive either massage treatments, or a self-care book.

The group assigned to receive massages, had up to 10 treatments over a 10 week period, which was provided by licensed, professional massage therapists.  A variety of massage techniques were used, as well as giving patients self help tips.  After the 10 weeks, this group was found to have had significant improvements in both function, and symptoms. After continuing the study for 26 weeks, the massage group again reported improvements in function, as well as symptoms, however, the self-care book group, had a medication use increase of up to 14%. There were no serious adverse experiences reported.

The conclusion of this study showed that not only is therapeutic massage safe, but has long term benefits for treating chronic neck pain, as well as in the short term.  Many cultures have known about the benefits of therapeutic massage for centuries, and many are now turning to professional massage therapists as part of their wellness programs.

If you are experiencing chronic neck pain, call or Text (760) 680 7910.Owner/operator Terree Nelson, at Blue Pacific Massage & Body Works is a fully qualified, professional massage therapist, who is highly trained in a variety of professional massage modalities!

Your Complexion & Massage

Massage Improves Complexion

Let's face it, most of us would love a better complexion, after all, our face is the first thing people see. When our skin is glowing, people will even comment on how great our complexion is. A healthy complexion makes us look healthy, as well as gives us self confidence. A professional massage therapist Hesperia, can assist with a healthier complexion by introducing you to a wellness program.

Our skin can go through a real work out in today's society. Smog, dirt, dust, not eating properly, smoking, alcohol, not drinking enough water, are just a few of the reasons our skin may not be as healthy as it could, or should be. The winter months can also be detrimental to our complexion, as that is when the skin is almost devoid of oxygen.

Scientists have stated that the skin is similar to the respiratory system, and the lungs. It requires oxygen, and stimulation to remain healthy, and appear healthy. A professional massage activates the blood vessels, and gives the skin cells an opportunity to breathe.  As our cells are constantly replacing themselves, it is very important to stimulate new growth, and keep them healthy.

Signs that our complexion needs a little help include, bags under the eyes, flabby skin, pale skin, skin that lacks elasticity, and is of an ashy-gray coloring.  Basically, if we know we are looking unhealthy, chances are, we are unhealthy.  Our blood circulation needs a little assistance, toxins removed, and together with an improved diet, and massage wellness program, we can have our complexion back to what it should be.

professional massage therapist will assist with improving the circulation, which provides oxygen to the skin. This helps to restore normal blood circulation, and cell metabolism.

Blue Pacific Massage and Body Works, is a professional massage business located in Hesperia, California. Highly trained, and qualified, owner, Terree ensures that every client is treated according to their individual needs. She can even design a personalized massage program for you. Regardless of whether you need stress management, assistance with a sports injury, or just simply want to feel healthier, Terree has the massage techniques to help you, help yourself.

Injured Or Not Massage Benefits You

Massage Therapy Is Not Just For Injured

Some people may only consider Massage Therapy, if they're injured, stressed, or are having other muscular issues. The truth is, a good regular massage therapy plan shouldn't just be considered by those trying to recuperate from an injury, or trying to gain back mobility.

Usually, those injured will rely on traditional medicines and treatments first.  When things still aren't progressing properly, they tend to seek out the assistance of a professional massage therapist such as Blue Pacific Massage and Body Works.

Even though massage therapy is a gentle, guided exercise to strengthen a tired body, as well as relieve stress, it is also a great way to just rejuvenate, to keep the body, and mind relaxed in the most optimal way possible. Having a regular massage and wellness routine helps keep you centered, the body and mind relaxed and your mobility up to par which gives us that all around “good” feeling that we all crave so much.

Even those who don't feel that they need a massage will benefit from the relaxing touch of a professional who is highly qualified, most professional massage therapists are also trained in a number of different massage techniques and can discern what areas need the most work and which massage technique to use so as to benefit you the most. We all have knots that need to be worked out, and sometimes a professional therapy session, with a qualified therapist which you will find at Blue Pacific Massage & Body Works in Hesperia Ca, is the only way.

How many often ask a friend, or partner to massage their neck, or back? Even though it feels great, unless the person performing the massage is qualified, and has an understanding of anatomy and physiology, they may not be getting into the root of the problem, or even alleviating it as much as possible.

Trained massage therapists, have to become certified, and take many courses in order to be qualified. They also are required to spend a certain amount of hours performing the actual massage with a licensed massage therapist's guidance before they become certified. The human body is sensitive and even fragile in some areas, so it is always a plus if you seek out a professional massage therapist especially if your issues are injury related.

For more information relating to my massage services, you can visit my website, or even visit my Facebook page. I can be contacted just Call Or Text (760) 680 7910 to arrange an appointment and to discuss your individual needs.

Geriatric Massage

Massage For Seniors

Just about anyone can reap the benefits of massage, and the elderly are no different. As a matter of fact, the elderly can certainly benefit a lot from the services of a professional massage therapist. This specific type of massage therapy is called geriatric massage.

Massage therapy can help seniors to get in touch with the vital sensations of their bodies and to feel nurtured and cared for.  It accelerates the removal of normal cellular wastes that can cause fatigue and malaise which can get backed up from a person being inactive or sedentary.

For seniors, especially those who may live alone or who are fairly inactive, regular massage is extremely beneficial.  As we age, many of our systems slow down.  Often seniors suffer from dehydration which further slows the transmission of fluids and vital nutrients to all cells of the body.  Many conditions can bothersome , like arthritis, achy joints, gastrointestinal disorders, balance issues, and even diminished vision and hearing. Massage therapy is used as treatment for many chronic pain issues.

All too often our senior citizens become confined and seldom get to enjoy the fresh outdoors, or interact with people of all ages, or keep themselves busy with hobbies or activities.  Massage therapy is just one way to assist seniors to begin to get moving again, which in fact they do as their health improves with the many benefits massage therapy provides.

Massage therapy is one path of treatment for patients with Alzheimer's disease. Although there is no known cure for the disease, many Alzheimer's patients receive massage therapy to help with relaxation. The direct contact of massage therapy provides those with Alzheimer's disease a way to relax, which reduces the anxiety associated with the disease.

It is important we consider the benefits of the physical contact with massage therapy for the elderly, especially for those who are residents in nursing homes or being treated in the hospital. Geriatric Massage Therapy allows seniors to enjoy some physical human contact. Touch is a very important part of staying healthy….

Massage Therapy Compliments Chiropractic Therapy

Massage Therapy & Chiropractic Therapy

While most people associate massage therapists as just those who make you feel good, they can do so much more than that.  A lot of people will attend chiropractors, who are medical professionals, to deal with back, neck, and spine problems. They may need readjusting, and bones put back into place. They are extremely beneficial for many people, however, they do not necessarily deal with knots, and muscular issues.

While it is certainly true that Chiropractors are in fact doctors, with a formal education, massage therapists such as Blue PacificMassage & Body Works are trained in other aspects of the healing of the body.  It is not uncommon for those receiving chiropractic therapy, to also seek out a massage therapist to help assist with the muscular, and tendon issues. If the client informs me, as they should, about any chiropractic treatment they are receiving, I can easily work the massage with that treatment, and focus on helping maintain the work the chiropractor has done.

A professional massage therapist will never attempt to take the place of a Chiropractor they will just be qualified, and trained to enhance the treatment already received.  No method or technique I use, will ever “un-do” the treatment you've received from a Chiropractor.  I will always question clients on what treatment they are receiving, where, and why, so I can devise a massage plan to work in with the existing treatment.

Many can feel pain following a chiropractic treatment, and this is where a trained, qualified massage therapist can help. By aiding with the aches, and pains, the muscles will assist in keeping the chiropractic adjustment stick.  I am quite able to assist not only before or after chiropractic visits, but with any injury, or muscular issue you are experiencing.

For more information relating to my services, you can visit my website, or even visit my Facebook page. Contact (760) 680 7910 to book an appointment with Blue Pacific Massage & Body Works  where dedication in giving quality therapeutic massage for over all health and wellness with strong knowledge in the various massage modalities including Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue, Sports Massage, Acupressure, Shiatsu, Lymph Drainage, Reflexology and more is the number one priority !

Massage for Spinal Stenosis

Massage and Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis an abnormal narrowing (stenosis) of the spinal canal that may occur in any of the spine regions. The narrowing causes a restriction in the spinal canal, resulting in a neurological deficit. It can be a very painful condition that causes great discomfort due to the degenerative effects on the neck and back. A professional massage can be used to greatly alleviate the pain and discomfort. If not diagnosed and treated properly, this painful condition can lead to chronic back and neck pain, which can limit the daily activities of the sufferer.  Household chores, work, and even family fun time can be a challenge.

Normally, the pain of spinal stenosis is located in the lower back, as well as the neck region.  It can also radiate to arms, hips, and legs. Flexibility may be lost, and discomfort can occur when leaning backwards. Some people may also suffer numbness, tingling, and cramping. Walking for any extended period of time can also prove difficult, as well as stretching.  A professionalmassage is beneficial for all these negative effects that spinal stenosis has on a person's life.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is always advised to first contact your healthcare provider.  You need to ascertain whether the pain is actually caused by spinal stenosis, as you also need to be able to inform me first, so I can devise a massage plan to assist.

How Can I Help?

·         Deep Tissue Massage – this technique is used to reach deeper into the muscles and puts direct pressure to release the muscle tension in your tendons, ligaments, and muscles.

·         Swedish Massage – The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber) and vibration/shaking.

·         Cranial Sacral – this involves a gentle manipulation of the soft tissues and bones of the head, as well as the pelvis and spine.

How much massage therapy needed will greatly depend on the client's condition. Some people need ongoing regular massage therapy in order to live a fully functional lifestyle. However, with an individually devised massage program for your particular condition, and even pain level, I can greatly assist in reducing some of the symptoms, and have you feeling much better.

Take the opportunity to read all the information about the services I provide, on my website, Blue Pacific Massage & Body Works, or even visit my Facebook page.

You can call me during business hours on (760) 680 7910.
